BEGINNING OF A RAMANCE
Among the businessmen of Lanark was a young Jewish boy in his late teens by the name of Joseph E. Hess. His parents had emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1845. Like many others they did not want their boy to serve in the German army. Just how Joe became such a successful businessman at his young age I never learned.
It is not surprising that Mary Catherine was attracted to Joseph and him to her, though at that time she was barely sixteen. The date was April 15, 1865, shortly after the news had been received of the tragedy that took the life of Abraham Lincoln. The town was in deep shock. The streets of the village were crowded with concerned citizens. Joe and Mary however, were more interested in each other than the tragedy and quietly slipped away from the crowd.
