"I saw the flames gradually making their way toward my own home and there seemed to be little hope that our house and stables with hay and straw stacks could escape destruction. And then a miracle occurred. A mile away to the northeast we saw a man with a team of horses hitched to a plow heading at full speed toward the house. Without slowing down he repeatedly circled the house until a barricade had been made that the flames could not jump. The man who saved the house was Uncle Calvin in whose cabin I had spent my first few weeks in the Dakota Territory. Although I was less than five years old when all of this occurred the memory of the fire and of Uncle Calvin`s heroics has remained with me for more than eighty years."

Calvin was born in Union County, Pennsylvania. He moved with his family to Northern Illinois in 1845. They eventually settled in Stephenson County near Pearl City.
When the Civil War broke out he was 18 years old but escaped the draft - probably because he was too short.
About this same time he and his brother Jimmy decided to go to California in search of adventure. Later in his life Calvin would entertain his friends with vivid stories of their encounters with Indians. Eventually they would return home to Illinois by way of Panama.
In 1869, Calvin settled on a quarter section of land near Elk Point, Dakota Territory.
By 1874 he was back in Illinois and married Amy.
The couple suffered several tragedies in the years that followed. Two daughters and a son died in infancy as well as a granddaughter at age 20.
