Research shows that William was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England in 1624. By 1649 he had immigrated to Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The town of Gloucester had been established in 1623, just three years after the pilgrims had landed in Plymouth and was incorporated in 1642.

William married Abigail Clark on September 10, 1651 and served as town selectman from 1671 to 1691.

He died in 1717 ate the age of 93.

William "The Carpenter" Sargent

William's first born son John was drowned in a shipwreck during an expedition against Port Royal in 1710.
