Sherman is listed in several U.S. census as Germain Scheidt. So he must have changed his name later in life.

Sherman's grandparents John and Catherine were the first of the Scheidt family to settle in America. Both of their parents were from the Alsaca-Lorraine area of Europe which had been claimed by both the German and French during their parent's time there.
