During the Civil War John served with New Jersey's 12th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Obtaining the rank of corporal he took part in several important engagements including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was mortally wounded during the battle of Spottsylvania Courthouse in Virginia and died a few weeks later at the age of 21
